SHS Color Guard

Description

This year at Seward High School we had 16 members in our guard. Our marching show was called "Ascending". It consisted of four pieces: "Against the Light", "Ascend", "Into the Light", "Into the Clouds!". We all worked very hard this year and I would say we were very successful. This was my third year in color guard and my second year as section leader, so I had the opportunity to lead the group. It was a great experience that helped me gain leadership skills.

Yearly Routines

Each year, SHS colorguard learns about 5 routines. I think it is important that we learn multiple routines so we can improve our skills and learn new moves. Each year we start out by learning the tryout routine. This is full of basic moves that the newbies just learned. Tryouts occur each spring around April. Then in the summer during our first band camp, we learn the 4th of July routine. We typically chereograph this, but some years our band director or chereographer does. We use this routine in our 4th of July Parade. At this same we are learning basic moves to go with the drumline cadences, and our school song routine. Then during our next band camp, we start learning the show. This is obviously our most important thing, so we spend the majority of our time on the moves so we can start learning the drill with it too. Lastly, we chereograph our routine for the Christmas parade, which occurs in November.
